Change a Child's Life by Becoming an Aspiranet Family!

Hear My Story: Richard

“When you’re homeless, it’s hard to look beyond your basic survival needs. Aspiranet helped me gain stability so I could pursue my life goals. Now I can give back to others and be a positive force for good in my community.” – Richard

Richard Lazaro Alonso, 27, lived in 12 different foster homes growing up and became homeless at age 18 when he “aged out” of foster care. Before entering foster care, he endured traumatic abuse from his biological father, leaving him with scars on his face that serve as a reminder of his childhood even today.

“I’ve been in foster care since I was seven years old,” Richard said. “I was thankful when I entered the system because I was able to escape my home.”

As a teenager, Richard entered a foster home that helped him understand that his childhood need not define his future. Just one family believing in his potential made the difference for Richard. Richard graduated from Fresno State in 2013, where he studied criminology and social work. He now works as an Aspiranet Life Coach, helping former foster youth transition to adulthood.

Richard’s other passion is his work as a personal trainer. Growing up, sports and physical fitness taught him discipline, life skills and kept him off the streets. Today, he is working to provide training and scholarships for youth just like him, who need additional support and guidance to thrive.

“As a child growing up, I was always fearful of making mistakes; now I help mentor foster kids” Richard said. “A foster parent changed my life.”
